What do we need to know and do about Google Caffeine?

It’s been over half a year since the announcement of Google Caffeine, the newer, more streamlined version of the current Google search engine; but still there’s no sign of it. Whether it has already been rolled out or not, we can’t know for sure and so far Google has gone quiet on the matter. Personally, I think they’re already pushing it out little by little; it makes more sense to. Either way, here is the low-down on Google Caffeine.

As more and more websites are published online, the need for more relevant, accurate results for users is paramount; this has always been Google’s main aim.

Rich Snippets: providing structured information to enhance local search

Local search is a big thing this year in the world of SEO. As Google aims to provide more relevant and useful results to users, their algorithms will dig out structured information from sites and display them in the form of ‘snippets’ in their SERPs.

Rich snippets enable users to see a brief summary of information on a particular site, which will help them better determine whether or not that is what they were looking for.

Basic SEO Checks – duplicate content / plagiarism issues

One of the easiest but important SEO checks you can do is to check for duplicate content. Content is considered duplicate if a substantial block of text from one page is found on another page, whether on the same site or a different site. The causes of duplicate content may be unintentional or it may be deliberate and malicious.

Problem: Search results displaying description from DMOZ

A client contacted me last week claiming that his description being displayed in the SERPs was out of date and suspects that Google may be pulling the description from the DMOZ listing.

After checking the meta description of the homepage, I found that it also contained the aforementioned ‘out of date’ description. However, that’s not to say that the description being shown in the search results had not been taken from DMOZ, as Google is known for doing this.

BRIC Art Auction: an investment in Chinese art

This weekend was the weekend of the BRIC art auction. BRIC is the acronym which describes the four fastest developing countries; Brasil, Russia, India and China.

After watching some documentary (I forget the name) about emerging countries and its artwork, then visiting the Manchester Art Gallery’s ‘Facing East’ exhibition which showcased artwork from Indian and Chinese artists, George and I decided it would be worth investing in some modern Chinese art.

Creating category pages in WordPress

I was looking for a way of creating category pages in WordPress that displays blogposts from a particular category. A colleague from work said he got round this by creating a new template and writing a script which pulls the desired category onto the page. As I like to keep having to code to a minimum, I decided to hunt for a WordPress plugin which will do exactly what I needed.

Springtime BMF

I’ll have been going to British Military Fitness for two years this June and having trained through all seasons and all weathers, I can confidently say that I’m glad spring is finally here. The days of the frozen fingers,  wet feet and chilly, muddy bums seem so long ago, when fellow BMFers would willingly ‘jog on the spot’ as temperature dropped down to -5°c at one point.

Last week, I attended six sessions in seven days. I would have trained everyday if they held classes on Friday evenings, but unfortunately not. However, I’ve taken next Friday off work to extend my Bank Holiday Monday weekend to 4 days, and will attend the Bruntwood Friday morning session.

Apparently, an average BMF session burns 640 calories, which meant I burnt 3840 calories last week. Good times :)

Tonight at Sale, my Red (Intermediate) group got taken by a new instructor Mark, I think he was called. He was rather comical unintentionally, but really good. Kind of old school, military style, hardcore but nice about it at the same time! We did lots of sprints, doing laps around a field, and concentrated mainly on core exercises.

I think it’s great that we get a good variety of instructors with different styles of instructing, we never know what to expect; every session is different and most importantly, enjoyable.

Backlinks, and how to check for them

Backlinks, also known as inbound links are links from websites that point to your own site. The number and quality of backlinks you have to your site has a profound effect on your site’s page rank and has been described as the backbone of search engine optimisation. If you have many backlinks from high quality authoritative sites with good page rank, it will help strengthen your own site to rank better in the search engines.

There are some great tools available to check your own and your competitors backlinks, all free, providing invaluable information to further help you on your search engine optimisation quest. Here are some that I use:

  • Yahoo Site Explorer – I use this frequently, simply type the URL you wish to check the backlinks of and press ‘Explore URL’. Change the ‘Inlinks’ option to show all inlinks ‘except from this domain’. The neat thing about using site explorer is that there is the option to export the results as a tab separated text file (TSV) which you can open in Excel.
  • Backlink Watch – nice, no frills backlink checker which also shows the anchor text or banner image of the link
  • Analyze Backlinks – Oftentimes, when the above two fail to work; either Yahoo site explorer goes down, or Backlink Watch runs out of its daily quota check, I turn to this.
  • SEOMoz Backlink Checker – This is a really comprehensive tool, prodiving you with everything you want to know about backlinks, including graphs and statistics; you must be a member to use this.
  • There are many others out there, some with different functions than others, it’s just a case of trying them all out and finding one that works for you.
