Eurovision 2010

I’m currently watching this year’s Eurovision which is held in Oslo, Norway. There’s been many great songs this year (and some not so great), really impressed. I feel a lot of the countries have tried to stick to their roots this time round, incorporating their traditional styles into the music. Some ballads, some rock-y tunes and some funky euro-beats going on.

My favourites so far have to be Moldova, Greece, Serbia, Turkey and France. Naturally, I’d root for Greece as my boyfriend George is Greek. Actually he’s Greek Cypriot, but I thought Cyprus did awful tonight – some guy singing like a wet fish, ugh. Greece’s song OPA! was sung by famous singer Georgios Alkaios. It was extremely Greek with some Arabic undertones, I love it and for the first time in my life, I’ll be voting.

Ella, ella Greece!

Unlocking the iPhone (if you’re with O2)

My friend Fai told me about this. We’re both going to Hong Kong in June (on different dates) and while I’m there I’d like to be able to use my iPhone abroad using a local sim card.

Fai gave me this link for details on how to unlock my iPhone. This service has been available since November 2009 and for both contract and pay as you go customers on O2. Monthly contract customers can have this unlocking service for done for free but will still have to pay the remainder of the O2 contract they are on. Pay as you go customers will be charged £15 which will either be taken off their top-up credit, or have their free Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On service taken off if the iPhone was bought less then 12 months ago.

Either way, the unlocking form will need to be filled in. On the third page, you will be asked for your iPhone’s IMEI number which is 15 digits long and can be found by pressing *#06# into the keypad. If the form doesn’t work the first time as it’s rather temperamental, try it again. I succeeded the second time round.

It says it should take about 14 days for the unlocking process to complete, but Fai assured me that it’s much quicker as he only waited 4 days for his confirmation email to come through. Good job, as I’m flying next week!

Pendulum – watercolour

Have you heard the new single Watercolour by Pendulum? If not, check it out! The band comes from Australia (now residing in the UK) and the music style is kind of like a fusion of electronica and rock mixed with drum and bass. I have to admit that I’d never listened to anything of theirs until this single even though I heard them mentioned here and there in the past.

I really like Watercolour. When I first heard it (at work!) it reminded me of an upbeat version of ShadowPlay, my keyboard playing friend’s band who funnily enough, are Australian. Also, it brought back memories of one of my favourite bands, Paradise Lost, a gothic metal band from Halifax which dabbled in electronica style during the late 1990′s to early 2000′s. They’ve since gone back to their metally roots. Paradise Lost rock :)

Achey legs and shin splints

I didn’t go training tonight because I’m suffering from shin splints. Anyone who has run excessively or over-trained will know my pain. Apparently it’s very common in the army. It’s like the muscle tearing away from the bone or something; the pain oddly disappears as I’m training but returns tenfold soon after. I know the best thing for it is rest so that’s what I’m doing.

Speaking with my friend and work colleague Dan, he advised I give myself a deep tissue massage across my shins to help ease the shin splints. He said to make sure I massaged downwards though, and not upwards. I questioned why this was and he explained that because the blood is oxygenated, it should travel the way it’s naturally travelling, away from the heart. Something like that. I never knew this, but it kind of makes sense. Just wanted to share this with you. :)

Google Page Speed Score – Optimising and speeding up my own site

While I’ve been playing about with the Page Speed plugin for Firefox for a while now, I never actually bothered to implement the changes suggested by it.

Well, with Google now counting page loading times as a signal in its ranking algorithm plus being particularly bored one night, I decided to action the suggestions made by Google Page Speed and see whether I could bump up my score from its 75/100 to 100/100. Below, I will walk through the changes I made and how I went about it. [Read more...]

PageRank does not correlate to ranking well in search engines!

There are many people who get hung up about what PageRank they have. They start to panic when the little green bar in the Firefox toolbar drops from level 4 to level 3; “My PR’s dropped, there’s something wrong with my site!” Don’t worry!!

The green bar is really nothing to go by and certainly nothing to worry about. Here are some reasons why.

Inaccurate and out of date

Although PageRank is constantly updated at Google, the one shown to us in the toolbar is only updated 2 – 4 times a year so for the majority of the time it is pretty much out of date and inaccurate. [Read more...]

Training in the Summer heat

With summer finally in full swing, my hay fever also is too. I’ve been doing my BMF training regularly at Sale Water park and Bruntwood park in Cheadle, and with the fields all freshly cut, I’m really feeling it! I used to use antihistamine tablets but find the nasal spray alternative to be much more effective for me.

Temperatures in Manchester this weekend reached 26 degrees and I trained Saturday and Sunday morning, 10-11am. Usually I’m all over it, banging out the reps, running off across the field and back again to wait for the next set of instructions. But this heat really took it out of me – I was cheating on reps, doing 17 pressups instead of 20, walking in parts when I should have been running and not jogging on the spot when the instructor’s back was turned. Still, I wasn’t the only one and I managed to do the sessions from beginning to end without stopping so it’s not all bad. :)

Some reasons why Google Page Rank may drop

PageRank, named after one of the co-founders of Google, Larry Page is a ranking algorithm based purely on backlinks, taking into consideration the quality and authoritativeness of these links. Quality links from pages with authority and high PR will in turn pass on the strength to the page it is linking to and help boost that pages own Page Rank.

Gaining good quality links regularly is needed in order to improve or at least maintain the same PR for a homepage otherwise you’ll find that the PageRank drops. However, there are some other possible factors which may affect or cause a drop in Page Rank and I’ve listed a few below. Note that the factors listed below do not affect PR directly and is not exhaustive nor conclusive, but by just taking some simple steps you can ensure that your content is rich, engaging and will keep your reader interested which is your ultimate goal. My new see through Converse pumps

George came back from a trip to London (Shoreditch to be exact) and brought me back a pair of Converse pumps. They weren’t any normal pair of Converse though; these were clear, or see through (or see-thru, depending how you spell it). I was sceptical at first. Sure, they are mega funky and uber cool, but I had concerns mainly on the breathability of a pair of plastic shoes and secondly on the comfort of them.

I have to say that they are actually one the comfiest pairs of pumps I have tried on, with a thick inner sole with good bounce. The see through plastic material is dotted all over with tiny holes ensuring my feet can breathe and not get sweaty (eww). Top it all off, I wear either size 3 or 4 shoes, but mostly a small 4 – these awesome Converse are size 3 and a half -  the perfect fit! Check it out below. [Read more...]

Google’s ‘new look’ left-panel sidebar for refined search results

Last Wednesday saw the official worldwide roll out of the new Google sidebar – you may have already experienced the sidebar long before the roll out; mainly it was in the form of a ‘Show options’ link which would open up the sidebar. It seems that it will now be a permanent fixture on Google’s search results pages and no longer optional.*
