Page not ranking or missing – SEOmoz’s 10 minute audit

When performing an audit on a site with pages that aren’t ranking, there are a number of basic steps that everyone can do to check whether your page has been filtered out by Google, or if it’s  being indexed at all. Dr. Pete from SEOmoz sums up these checks in a great post entitled 10-minute missing page audit.

It’s entitled “10 minutes” not because that’s how much time you should spend checking ranking issues; it may take you less if you’re lucky and find it straight away, or the problem may require further time and deeper analysis. But it’s a great step-by-step checklist to anyone to follow.

Bing adds new features; Download Data and Add Query String Parameter

Bing Webmaster Tools continues to impress with new added features. Granted, they’re features that Google Webmaster tools already have so they’re not providing anything shiny or new but still, it’s about time. Several days ago, Bing announced the ability to download data, what!! They said due to user’s feedback, they’ve responded accordingly. I reckon they’d been working on it all along; I mean, the data is pretty pointless if you can’t download it and sure as hell they know this.

Below is the data fields available for download according to type, simply by clicking on the “Export” button on the right of the Webmaster tool interface.

Type Available data fields
Export Crawl, Index, and Traffic Stats Date, Pages Crawled, Pages with Crawl Errors, Pages Indexed, Impressions, Clicks
Export Queries Query, Impressions, Clicks, Click-Through Rate
Export Crawl Details URL, HTTP Code, Type
Export Sitemaps Name, Date Submitted, Type, Status
Export Blocked URLs URL, Entity Type, Block Type, Date
Export Query String Parameters Parameter, Date
Export Registered Sites Registered URL, Site verification status, verification code used

Bing have a Feature Requests forum where you as the user can voice your opinions and tell them how you’d like to see Bing’s Webmaster Tools improved and features to be added.

The second new feature they added which again for Google is not new, is the “Add Query String Parameter”, in the new page under Crawl > Crawl Settings. Say you have pages in your site being duplicated dynamically with query strings appended to the original URL, a common issue with e-commerce sites, you are now able to tell Bing to ignore these query strings so they don’t get indexed.
