An area of fitness I severely neglect is stretching and is the cause of many issues, tightness and niggles I suffer with due to lifting heavy weights on a regular basis. While I visit my sports therapist on a monthly basis to fix specific areas of tightness, it would be nice to loosen off with general maintenance via yoga and stretching at home.
Featuring fitnesswear from Debenhams, I kick started this week by doing daily stretches!
Below, you can see me attempting the aptly named Pancake Stretch (my cat, also featured in the photo is called Pancake!), or in yoga circles the “Kurmasana”. It involves getting into the straddle position, legs as wide as you can get it and folding the torso forwards until the forehead touches the ground. As you can see I am nowhere near achieving this.. so this is going to be my first yoga challenge. Apparently it’s an advance yoga pose which requires great flexibility in the adductors and the hip extensors – especially useful for sedentary types like me who spend the majority of the time sat in front of a computer screen.
Next up is the “Hanumanasa” or simply the full splits. This is a stretch which I’ve been meaning to work on, but never dedicated enough time to achieve the full pose but intend to this year. Its benefits are numerous, from stretching out the thighs, hamstrings and groin area (all areas that get tight from weightlifting especially!) and also helps to strengthen the abdomen, legs and hips too.
Finally, the headstand or the ‘Sirsasana’ which I can almost manage without toppling over. The lack of core stability is noticeable in the clip as my body sways back and forth as I try to maintain control of the full movement. My goal for this year is to progress from a headstand into a full handstand and hold for at least 30 seconds!
